Hi All,

...looking at a Lund 14ft(Rebel) with center console and controls w/ Honda 40, 4 stroke on the back. Would this motor go slow enough to troll for walleyes, with this boat combo?

This was just the type of boat I was looking for, but not interested in spending the cash on a 4 stroke, if I'd still need a trolling motor to run this boat slow enough.

Anyone have a similar setup, or knowledge of such? ... much appreciated!! ;)

trolling questions...

I know the most common trolling methods are with a separate trolling motor and/or with your tiller drive outboards, but does anyone use their main outboard to troll with outboard controls?
...or is it all in the wrist action(tiller)?

you can troll with any motor, if too fast forward, you troll in reverse. really depends on conditions. that the boat for a test drive, and try idling in both directions.

If you plan to cover lots of water trolling for walleye and don't want to use a trolling motor, you have two choices. Troll forward at whatever speed the engine idles at. Most 40 HP engines will troll down to 2 mph give or take a little. If the bite requires less than that you can back troll. One other option is to install a trolling plate the drops down over the prop to slow the boat further. You raise the plate when done trolling.

It should work fine. I have an 18' aluminum Fisher and troll with a 90 2 stoke. Yours should troll better as it's nice and smooth with the 4 stroke. If it is too fast you can always use a tolling plate or the Smart Tabs Pro Troller series.
You can also use a drift sock to slow you down.

I currently live close to the Lund plant- there are a ton of boats here just like the one you want to buy. For trolling for early season/ COLD water walleye most folks like to get anywhere from 0.8 to 1.2 mph and after the water warms up anywhere from 1.2 to 2.0 mph. There are several ways to get to that speed with that 40 Honda. You may be able to get below 1.5 mph with it as it is at idle- my Nissan 50 (on a Smokercraft Stinger) and my father's Yamaha 50 4 stroke (on an Alumacraft Lunker) are able to get down below 1.5 mph at 700 RPM's. You might be able to accomplish what you want without any modification. MAYBE...

On the other hand, the alternative is to try back trolling, or a trolling plate, or a drift bag, or BEST YET, just get a bow mounted Minn Kota Powerdrive with Co-Pilot....

A 40 Honda on the little Lund Rebel is quite a combination. The Rebel is light thus I believe that the Honda 40 will probably push you too fast at idle....your best bet is an electric bow mount...

wow... gotta love technology,, I never knew about that MinnKota co-pilot/autopilot device until now. Thanks for that! I'm gonna look into getting this setup with whatever boat I settle on. ;)
