I have a motorguide magnum 740 trolling motor with a 4 blade motorguide ninja prop. I have broken 2 of the 4 blades off and need to replace the prop. In everyones experience is it better to have a 2 blade or a 4 blade?

The answer is: It depends! It the motor came with a 4-blade it must have been the best for that application. Besides, is a two blade (or three blade for that matter) even available for it. This is not just a buy one and slap it on situation -- the prop must actually fit the shaft and work with the fastening system.

Back in '89 I bought a Minnkota with a very large diameter 2 blade prop. I was thinking that it would be best for the most torque. Well it was very good on torque, but at the speeds where I ran my motor, which was usually slow so that I could fish a spot thoroughly, the big prop was very slow to respond to power. Got to be a real pain.

I'd agree with others on follow the designer's choice, but additionally, I won't own another large 2 blade. I currently have a Motorguide 65 lb or thereabouts and it is 2 bladed, but the blades are rather short and do not pose the same problem. The 4 blade should be a great prop...never had one, just guessing.

It isn't so much the diameter of the prop or the number of blades a prop has that determines how it performs. It is the "design" which includes, diameter, blade shape, number of blades, rake, and most important -- pitch. Get too much pitch on an electric motor and the motor will be lugging and therefore drawing much more current than necessary.

Alright great, thank you for the replies. I will just stick with the 4 blade, it looks more like a weed eater, and probably better for my bass boat.

That makes a lot of sense and you are probably right on.

The Motorguide 2 bladed power prop is terrible for weeds and on a bow motor with no reverse a real pain to get them unwound and off.
