I have a Minnkota 55PD trolling motor and a Hummingbird depth finder. The cord for the depth finder hangs on the outside of the trolling motor shaft. It can not be tape/attached to the shaft since the shaft slides up and down in a bushing.

My question is what do you think about drilling a hole at the base of the shaft, cut the depth finder cord and run it threw the hole to the inside of the shaft and out the head of the trolling motor. I would seal the hole up with silicone so water does not get in. I would then splice the depthfinder cord together.

Is this possible, good idea or bad. At the present time the cord is always catching weeds and flaps around and I am sure it will not be long before it get cut or broken.

Give me your thoughts. Thanks.

Re: Trolling motor and hummingbird connections

fishon99
It is generally not recommended to cut the wire, as it is hard to splice it back together correctly without the signal being messed up. It has been done though, but I don't recall how it was done. Might do a search on trolling motors and maybe you can find the post that refers to this. Wasn't too long ago. Maybe you could zip tie it loosely to the shaft to hold it closer.
