I've never owned or even used a fish finder before but I think I'm going to get one this year and I have a couple of questions.

I'd like to mount the transducer on my bow mount trolling motor.

How effective is the fishfinder while underway at WOT? I'd like to keep an eye on the water depth while going between fishing spots but I'm worried about keeping the trolling motor down at WOT. I usually always fold it back on the deck of the boat so that the shaft doesn't bend from the motor dragging in the water. Do I need to do this or will it be ok?

Will the fishfinder even show me what's infront of me or does it just show what's under the boat? If it does show me what's in front of me, how far does it show me?

Are there advantages or disavantages to mounting it on the stern or bow mount trolling motor?

Some quick background - I'm looking at the Garmin FishFinder 120 and the boat has a 40 pound thrust minnkota bow mount and a 15 HP Evinrude. I'm not stuck on the Garmin but I've read good things here about them.

Thanks!

Re: Trolling motor and Transducer moutning??

You gonna leave the troller down while running at WOT, JSFinn? Or are you gonna mount 2 transducers?

With the 2 transducers and a switchbox you can have the best of both uses. Be sure to get a unit that you can add the switchbox and second transducer to.

Running on plane with the troller down is a definite no-no. Boat wont handle and it will surely destroy the troller.

The Garmin is definitely a good unit and I prefer their GPS, but I prefer Lowrance/Eagle when it comes to sonar.

Sonars show you what is under the transducer. The good ones can do it at 50mph. Either the Garmin 120 or an Eagle FishEasy will do the trick.

Good luck. :)

Thanks JB - you always have a quick answer and I appreciate and trust your advice - along with many others.
I'll check out the Lowrance units and post back what I decide on and why - I'm taking the boat out for the first time this season tomorrow and even though it got stocked up with all kinds of new toys over the winter, I think I need just one more! :)
