I am looking to buy a 36" 40# transom mount Minn Kota trolling motor. Would that be a good backup motor to get me in from the bay?

Depends on how far you have to go and how good your battery is. Winds and current come into play too. i would go with at least a 55lb motor for a 17 ft boat.

2HP isn't much if the tide and wind are against you. How about a 7.5HP motor, as a minimum.

What bay are you on?

If you are planning to use it in the bow, the motor you are looking at is too short and not powerful enough. If you are putting it on the transom, it is no where near powerful enough.

For the bow of something like a Bayliner Capri, you will need about a 55 inch length on the shaft and a minumum of 60 pound class motor. If you are putting it on the transom, I recommend a 7.5 minimum hp engine.
