Trolling motor - variable speed or 5 speed?

How much better if any is a variable speed over a 5 speed trolling motor? I'm wanting to buy a new 55 lb MinnKota Riptide, and the 5 speed is about $40 less.

I was wondering how valuable it is to have the ability for infinite speed selection?

I'm replacing an older MinnKota which has the electric power steering. I've had nothing but trouble with that electric steering foot control. I'm going to get one with a handle on it so that the person in the front can steer it by hand.

The obvious advantage of variable speed control over five speeds is when none of the five speeds is right for the conditions. Variable can give you what you want. Other than that, no difference.
