Good morning, I am in th eprocess of getting my dad's boat back on the water with many issue to tackle...one being tha tthe trolling motor battery (deep cell) shows fully charged but when i test the wires in the front of boat i get nothing. I have 2 thick wires coming out for the trolling motor...one red, one black...got it...i do understand alittle about the flow of current. the trolling motor also has 2 wires...much the same. It seems to simple to just hook these together and it work...am i over think this over should there be another switch/wire? thanks....the trolling motor is an older motorguide 12V foot controlled...not sure of the lbs.

Re: trolling motor wiring

There "should" be a breaker or fuse, within 12" of the battery, on the + wire for the trolling motor. Check to see if the breaker is tripped or fuse blown. If there isn't one, then you should add one. Other than that, make sure all connections are clean and tight, especially the crimp connections.

Are you testing this with a meter, or just plugging int he trolling motor?

This is what it needs to look like. If 12 volts and ground are not present at the receptacle, you have a connection problem, battery problem, breaker/fuse problem, wire problem or a receptacle problem. It really is too simple. You didn't say how you are testing so that may be leading you astray as well.

Re: trolling motor wiring

I did not post the motor model because i was just trying to get power to the front of the boat. I got in there last night and found that the circuit breaker inline coming off of deep cell was rotted/burnt up. My dad lst this boat sit for a few years with no cover and no maintenance. I cut out breaker and wired the 2 ends together...tested the front and was good. Will be installing new breaker tomorrow when i get a chance to get to store. Thank you for the diagram and assistance.

Re: trolling motor wiring

Great you found the problem, I'd be sure to replace the breaker.
