trolling motors

What is the difference between 12v and 24v? I know what a volt is but are they interchangeable? I want to replace my old Evinrude but am a bit confused on this part.

a 12v runs off one battery and a 24v runs off two. if you have a heavy boat i would go with a 24v because you will be able to run longer than if you you had a 12v on the same boat. they also make a 12/24v which can run off on or two batteries.

No, a 12 volt will only run on 12 volts and a 24 will only run on 24.

5150abf, they make some motors that can run on 12 or 24 volts. There is a switch to select one or the other.

hmmm. Is there a way to tell? I think it's running off one battery but the wiring in the boat is a mess...lots of things sliced into other thing.

If you can give me the model number, it should be located on the side of the foot control, I can check my manual and see if your model is covered.

Trolling motors up to 55# thrust are usuallly 12V and require one battery. Once you get over 55# of thrust, the motors are 24 volts and require two 12V batteries in series. You can even get 36 volt motors and those would require three 12 volt batteries in series. I'm not aware of any motors being built today that operate on 12 or 24 volts. MotorGuide use to build most of those in the past.
