Re: trolling with a 1994 130hp johnson

You will get lots of carbon build up trolling with a big 2 stroke and foul lots of plugs. It also puts a lot of hours on your engine. I would take a look at putting a kicker on the boat. It will save you alot of hours on your main motor, be alot quieter, save you a ton of money on gas, and give you a way home if the main conks out on ya.
I bought a boat with a '94 90hp johnson about 18 months ago. It had been used for trolling alot and the motor showed alot of signs of wear even though the owner claimed there weren't many hours on it. Got a great deal and bought with the thought of replacing the motor with a 4 stroke. I was hoping the motor would last 2 to 3 years but if broke a crank in less than a year. Just put a new 90hp yami 4 stroke on her and boy is it sweet!

Re: trolling with a 1994 130hp johnson

hello
my poor VRO 1985 120 omc doesnt know that. I troll all day for stipers and yes I will admit I have not put plugs in it in several years.I do shock treat it with ringfree and once a year spray some tuner through it but I rarly take it out of the water as I dont own a trailer for it.
as far as kickers go, its been my professionbal observation that they are more trouble than they are worth as no one maintains them and when they really really need them they go POOF. my advice is buy a good one and keep it that way. do all the maint not just when its running poorly. by the time it runs bad the preventative maint is no longer viable and we just went to corrective maint. trust me corrective maint is always much more costly.
good luck and keep posting
PS the plate is called a back troller and is designed to slow the trolling speed down. not desirable in all cases.

jc1933 - Did I understand you post correctly that you are paying 11 grand for an 18' boat with a ten year old 130 on it? Seems a bit much to me.

Here we go!!!!
If it were me, and I had planned on doing alot of trolling, I'd first pull my spark plugs, regap to .040, then use partial or total synthetic oil only...It's a proven concept on idling motors....greatly reduces plug fouling, and much less smoke.
