Ihave been having this problem with propeller slppage. The boat is a 97 ranger with a 97 merc 150 efi and a trophy plus 4 blade 25pitch prop.Coming up out of the hole, about half way out the prop starts slipping....back off the throttle alittle...it will catch and the you can hammer it and it will take right off.the prop is a flo-torq2 so i replaced it with a new kit....still does the same thing.Looking at the prop there are 4 holes in it ...they are on the hub towards the end where the thrust washer is. They are about 1/2 to 5/8inch dia.I notice only one of them has a plastic plug in it.Are the holes for some kindof ventilation to allow for slippage? And you plug them till it performs correctly. If i remember right, two of the holes were plugged....one might of come off.does anybody know of these props?
thanks for any help
David

4 blade 25 pitch? Who are you trying to race? No wonder the hub is spinning! Drop down to a 19 and see how that feels my brutha! Work on it from there!

Eric,
He's has a bass boat. You are giving bad advise.
If he can blow out a 25" on takeoff what will a 19" do for him???????

DTherrien.
Those holes are mercury PVS(perfomance vent system) holes.
Go to your local merc dealer and buy some plugs for prop. Test your boat out with the varios size inserts.
It sounds like to me your prop is venting to much causing it to blow out on hard throttle.
Good luck!

Hi...thanks for the responses.
Bluewater i agree with you....that is what i thought the holes were. i would assume you plug them one at a time..till you stop getting blow-out.Other than that there is nothing else wrong.WOT the boat will run 5500 rpm and no prop spin....it only does it about half way out of the hole.

The holes are to help in your holeshot. You can plug them up if it is slipping too much. Another issue may be that you are using a small hubbed prop on a large hub outboard. Some of the Trophy props use rings around the leading edge of the hub to prevent the exhaust from escaping over the blades. Bluewater has given you some good advice. Only reason to drop down in pitch is if you are hitting your rev limiter. To explain the PVS.... the holes are there for a controlled slip at take off getting your motor in it's powerband to increase holeshot. Too big a hole and the prop will blowout... Play with the 4 holes with various plugs until it works for you. If that doesn't work the ventilation ring may be in order. Hope this helps.

Forgot to mention that there are several size plugs you can use. I believe it's fully closed, 1/8, 1/4 and 3/8. Or you can leave them out and get 1/2.
