Trottle/Shift Control Instruction?

I just purchased a 1993 50 HP Evinrude 4-stroke. As a kid I boated many years but not with a boat that had the same kind of controls. Since I purchased the boat & motor without a sea trial, I didn't get a good understanding of how the throttle/shift lever & choke works.

This is a single handle control with a button on the handle and another on the stationarly portion. I think I know what each is for but I'd rather be certain before launching the boat.

Obviously there is a key start with choke.

Directly below the key there is an empty hole. I'm guessing this may have been for a dead-man control?

Would someone please walk me through the use of this control.

[By the way, I'm going to end up divorced because of this site. I've spent hours reading posts; one leads to another and another.... I love it but my mate doesn't have the same enthusium. Thanks to everyone for the information and ideas.]

1. The button in the CENTER of the handle disengages the gear shift portion of the control box from the handle. This allows you to advance the throttle without shifting into forward. That is for engine warm up.

2. The button on top of the handle is for the tilt/trim up and down.

3. I do not know what the hole is for but you may be right. It may be a dead man switch. If it isn't there, I would install one. Are you sure there isn't a dead man switch and lanyard on the dash?

Do you have a picture?

If you are referring to a "lever" being on the stationary portion, this one is for fast idle to be used for cold starts. Once your motor starts and will maintain a normal idle speed you can push it back down and leave it there.

Are you sure you have a 1993 and that the engine is indeed a 4-stroke? I don't recall Evinrude marketing a 50 4-stroke until later.

By golly you might be right. The motor was sold to me as a 1993 but after reading your comment I looked at the motor and found a decal I didn't notice before. It must be a 1999. I can't imagine it meeting a 1999 EPA Standard if was made in 1993. There is also a decal on the mounting bracket "Made in Japan" [Photos attached]

Your engine is a rebadged Suzuki. It is a good one.

Your control is a bit different than I thought. The button (Square) is the gear shift release. It releases the gerar shift portion so you can advance the throttle, without shifting into gear.

The hole is for a dead man switch. I would install, or have one installed.

The switch on top of the handle is tilt/trim.
