trouble bleeding air out?

Finally got my tilt/trim put back together and it seems that the frothy air bubbles just keep coming up? I lifted it up and down 5 times(like the service manual states) and each time it did seem to get a "little" better but there is still a slight pause from when the slow movement goes to fast when coming up. How many times will I have to do this to get the air out?

We did the "5 times" cycle 3 times(and a number if times with just 3 cycles) and there was air that purged from the fill cap each time with frothy little bubbles and we waited 30 minutes between the cycles. It is about 32 degrees right now in Texas so would that have any bearing on the air bleeding out worse? We were working out of an open garage..

I am topping off the fluid each time until it is to the bottom of the fill hole so I know it doesn't have too much fluid. It works fine and no fluid leaks but it just seems like it is taking forever to get all the bubbles out?? Any input would be great. Thanks in advance.. Hank

I don't get many replys on the tilt/trim threads. They must be tricky or some of you outboard savy folks would have already put up some info. Any takers on any helpful hints on bleeding the air off?? Will it just take a little time to get it all out? I guess I will try the process again when it warms up here.We had a few inches of snow today in central texas and it was colder than a witches toe.. I did a site search and found a thread in the mercury outboard section that mentioned something about opening the manual release screw and raising and lowering the motor because the motor/pump is what makes all the bubbles?? Any truth to this?? I didn't see any replys that validated this method?? Thanks..Hank

Mine spits a bit in the very cold weather but smooths out when temps turn milder. Manual release valve is for when it will not power up or down, you can try loosening it a couple of turns and lift the leg by hand.
Tighten it real good when done, something like 45lbs.
I had to use a wrench on the screwdriver blade to break it loose.
Impact screwdriver would work better.

But if if it goes up and down under its own power already I would let the pump do the lifting and keep cycling it under power.

Thanks for the info. I guess I just need to work out the air little by little.. At least it works now and no leaks..

lift motor. lock in place, fill reservoir, put cap back on. lower, raise, repeat. if you do not put the cap back on, all you are doing is allowing more air in.

Sounds good. I will just let it sit for a day until I get home from work and keep doing what you posted tashasdaddy. Thats what I was doing but I guess after having all apart for the rebuild there is a good amount of air to get out. Thanks for the advice..Hank
