I am trying to drop the lower unit on my engine but it will not come down. I removed the two bolts on each side of the lower unit and also all the bolts for the trim tab. What appears to be holding things up is the steering rod or cable. I don't see any quick disconnect to remove that. There is what appears to be a bolt that goes through the very top of the steer rod or cable. The only problem is that it is buried under the engine. From what I have heard it should not be that hard to disconnect the lower unit and drop it. I am believing that I am missing a simple step, that I am not finding in the Seloc manual. Please Help. Thanks

Its likely that you never released the shifted rod from the upper linkage. There should be a spring hair pin behind the shift cable linkage. Pull it out and push in the linkage assembly to release the rod. There also is a hidden bolt under the trim tab.

You should also look into a factory manual on ebay or here, Selocs aren't very good at specifics since they cover so many different engines. You can usually find a factory manual on ebay for under $50.

Is there an easy way to get to that area. I am guessing I will need a long screw driver or socket wrench with long extensions to take the bolts off to drop it.

u-jointed adapters for sockets seem to be the best choice for getting in there.

put motor in reverse it make it easier to get to bolt take shift lver bolt pin out
you also have a bolt under torque tab to put it back in ya can tape the bolt to long screw driver to get it started or ya can put rtv in socket with bolt let it dry and install that way use 1/4 inch drive with long ex, and swivel tape swivel to keep it from flopping around

I got it apart and installed a new water pump, now the difficult part is getting the shifting rod back into place so the pin will go through it without having to remove a bunch of things. I think next time that it would of been easiest to remove the lower carb to clear up the area to do things easier.
