Hi guy's (and girls),

I'm the proud owner of a Sea Ray 230 Bowrider Select. The PO did not give the boat a name but I will. I asked my wife and children to think of a name but it's harder then we thought. Can you please help me with some nice suggestions?

Re: Trouble finding a name for my boat

Boat names are pretty personal ... You either find things about your/your family's personality and use that to name the boat (knew of a boat called "Mom Lost Again"), or you may find things about your boat itself that give it a name (my boat is "Fide" - that's the Latin word for "faith" which is exactly what keeps us going :) ).

So - we need to know a little about y'all in order to help out.

You're better off NOT naming your boat IMO. Most boat names are too "cute-sy" and/or just plain dumb.

Also, having a name just makes your boat more easily recognizable.....to boaters you may have pissed off at some point...or prospective thieves etc.

I feel the same way about "vanity license plates" on a car. I had them for a year or so, but they seemed tacky IMO.

P5233002b.jpgFor true Boatmen, naming a boat is part of the tradition. For a guy that just owns a boat, any stoopid name is OK.

For military vessels, naming a boat after a fallen hero, or a state or a city is traditional. For the traditionalist with a pleasure boat it should be named after a woman.

Now if you're realtionship is shaky or may become so (LOL), not a good idea to name it after the wife.

My pride and joy is named after my Mom & Grandma. The name carries the "II" at the end since it's the second boat in the family to carry the name. My Dad's boat was named after his wife and mother (my Mom and Grandma). Mom & Dad just celebrated their 65th anniversary, so I think it's safe to assume that if he still had a boat the name would have stood the test of time.

Re: Trouble finding a name for my boat

Thanks!! Finding the right name is a pain indeed. Off course it is personal but I like funny names (read that thread already Don :))

Hoosmatroos is the name of my company. I retrieve sunken boat (small ones). "Hoos" in Dutch is pouring water out a boat and "Matroos" means sailor. I don't want to name it Hoosmatroos but some already suggested that.

I served in the Dutch navy for 8 years but that was some time ago. I'm 45 now. Wife and two kids, daughter (Valerie) almost 16 and my son (Julian) is 13.

I'll give it some more thought.

/edit

I'm a fan (not a trekkie) of Star Trek. Names that came up:

Make it So
Engage
Number One

Hahaha, have given it some more thought. Enter Prize is real funny as is Shatnerd

You guys have lots of good names.

But yesterday evening lightning strikes me. I use on a lot of forums the nickname "Burp" At my model plane club everybody knows me that way. So obvious that I didn't think off that. I use that nick since 1985 back on the Bulletin Boards when internet wasn't there for real. Played Wing Commander with that nick and stayed with it all those years.

So will it be "Burp"? Saumon's name "Enter Prize" sounds very nice as well.

"Burp" needs no explanation for those who know me, "Enter Prize" obviously doesn't either.

Damn, difficult

Re: Trouble finding a name for my boat

DON'T name your boat "Leaky"

Did it take a long time to finally find this boat, the boat you were looking for?

If so, how about "Eureka". It means "I found it!"

It's supposedly what Archimedes said when the idea of his principle of buoyancy popped into his head.

As boaters, it's a law we all live by.

Capt Picard would approve.

Re: Trouble finding a name for my boat

I like "Engage" and "Make It So". What about "Sulu's Task" or something else trekkie and less obvious. I like boat names that take some consideration to understand. Just a little bit of a challenge to the observer's memory.
But yeah, with a personal nickname like Burp you almost have to use it. That nickname is unique.
