trouble getting in neutral

My merc 5.7 (1978) has some difficulty getting into neutral from gear. I've lowered the idle to make it easier, but then the engine stalls at idle after I've been running for a while. <br /><br />I had set the idle to ~600 in neutral, then read that it should be about 650 in gear. I've made that change and we'll see how it responds after a good run. <br /><br />Any other suggestions on this one?

Thanks! <br /><br />I looked at these adjustments last weekend, but found the shop manual confusing. This page explains it much better. I'll test it and adjust or replace as suggested.
