1990 Johnson GT100
My Pee hole got clogged up with something (dirt probably). I noticed this after the engine was running. Since then i have had problems getting on plane for some reason. Once it gets on plane it runs fine, but i am having peoblems getting there. Any ideas are appreciated.

thanks

Re: Trouble getting on plane

A clogged pee hole is nothin more than a clogged pee hole. Wouldn't have any relation to your problem. Might be time for a carb cleaning and tune-up

thanks, i just did a carb cleaning @ 7 mo. ago. I was just curious beacust the engine was ran with the pee hole clogged. and this Plane problem) happened immediately after. I will try and check the carbs again though. Thanks

Re: Trouble getting on plane

Usually, when your pee hole is plugged up it means a trip to the local clinic. If it's your motors pee hole it isn't serious. :D
As for the lack of power, check for spark, fuel and compression. Perhaps when you did the carb job a while back, you messed up the ingition/carb synch and pickup timing?

bm258 - Don't go fixin stuff until you know what to fix. Troubleshoot first - fix second. Follow jimmbo's advice.

Re: Trouble getting on plane

thanks for all of the advice guys!! I will check that stuff when i get a chance. I guess it seemed a little odd that this just happened immediately after the pee hole was clogged. Just out of curosity. If the pee hole is clogged, where does the water go instead of through the pee hole?

Re: Trouble getting on plane

The water simply continues to go on its normal route past the t-stats and down & out. A clogged indicator line in itself is nothing to worry about. But, if water wasnt coming out because there wasnt any -- thats a whole different story.

I'd do like Jimmbo suggested and start with a compression check.

Re: Trouble getting on plane

here's a simple non-engine possibility to explain the concidence of problems. This sounds too easy and obvious but I had to mention it:

ran/hit in shallow water, sucked up mud into water intakes which (A)eventually made its way to the narrow pee hole and plugged it up. (B)While you were dragging bottom, you messed up the prop and or trim. Now you can't get up on plane because of B.

Re: Trouble getting on plane

no, i never got an over heat warning. h_lankford u r right. i started the engine in muddy water and it did clog up the pee hole. I did not mess up the prop or the T&T. it just seems like the enging is having to work too hard to get on plane. cranks fine, idles fine, runs fine once it is on plane. Thanks again for all of the soultions. as soon as i get a chance i will check compression & other "stuff" Thanks again. Happy New Year!!

Re: Trouble getting on plane

OBJ, once i get on plane they are normal b/w 5000-5400. When the engine is trying to get the boat on plane the gage jupms b/w 3000 & 4500 (not sure of exact #'s, but in that area). I have noticed it moving b/w these numbers every time i try and get on plane. You can hear the engine rev up and the drop rpm's and then rev back up.

Re: Trouble getting on plane

That sounds like you are losing fire to one cylinder. Try grounding the plug wire's, one at a time. See if you can isolate that cylinder.

Re: Trouble getting on plane

Tend to agree with RJ.....don't think a spun hub alden...(course....anything is possible.. :) ) but I would expect to see the engine rev high at a higher rpm and the boat go no where.

I think taking a look at the ignition and spark is the way to go.

EDIT: Make sure the grounds on the ignition coils and the one for the pack are clean and tight. Lose ground can cause a lot of trouble.

Re: Trouble getting on plane

If your handy, cut the head off a 10penny nail and shove the end into a plug wire. Use insulated pliers and hold the sharp end of the nail 1/2" away from a clean engine ground and have a helper crank the engine. If you see a hot lighting like spark across the gap, consider it as good. Do this check on all the plug wires.

Ya sure you and the wife didn't gain a few extra pounds over the hollidays? It may come down to a choice, which gets left at the dock? Wife or cooler of beer.

Re: Trouble getting on plane

another quick question :) could this problem come from having the wrong spark plugs?

Re: Trouble getting on plane

When the motor ran OK what plugs were you using? What plugs are you using now?
