I havea 1973 Merc 50 hp that has had a lot done to it in the past year. When I bought this motor last year it needed the carbs re built so that was done along with rewiring the entire motor and power cable coming out of the outboard due to heavy corosion. This spring the water pump was rebuilt and replaced completely. Water pump base, impellor and everything completely replaced. I took it out to the lake 2 days ago for the first time since I have owned it and it died on me. Called the mechanic and he said to adjust the mixture at the carbs. So that has been getting better, it now runs in the water vs before only on the muffs. BUT it will not get up to speed when in gear and after a while it wants to die out. I feel this is probably a fuel issue but I don't know where to start trying how to figure the problem out. Any ideas? When it is running in gear it only goes the speed of a 10hp (maybe.) There is no trim/tilt on the motor other than manual tilt, just fyi. Thanks for any help in advance.

Re: trouble getting speed out of outboard

i guess to first start off is check compression if that checks out then check spark for sparking on all four cylinders and it to be nice blue and give a nice pop.

try pumping the primer bulb while running it see if this helps out first though if so then rebuild ur fuel pump u should be good to go then.

it wont be bad do a decarb with some seafoam.

and do a comp. check and spark check will probably tell u if u have any other problems
