Ok I got my boat to the lake yesterday and the engine is running fine, but I was having trouble getting it to go into gear at low throttle. It would do just fine in reverse and if I gunned it to run across the lake but I had issues when in a no wake area.

It is a 1987 Ozark with a 1988 40hp Johnson

I am thinking it has something to do with the throttle cable adjustments. My dad thought that was part of the problem last year when the engine wouldn't run so he adjusted them all over the place to no avail. And then he never got the boat running before he passed away so I am sure these cables are way out of whack but I am not sure how to get them back to where they go. There seem to be two of them and both have a red adjustment nut on them. Does anybody have any ideas?

Also I forgot to mention that with the throttle wide open it seems the motor is only pushing at about half speed and it seems to not have a lot of power to get itself on plane. from what I remember when the boat was not having problems it got on plane quick and you didn't even need the throttle pushed all the way down to do it.

Get a manual and read the instructions on how to adjust the cables.
Read them a few times then take the book with you to do it. You should be able to do them in short order and then give it a shot.

I don't mean this to sound rude but if I had a manual or easy access to one I wouldn't need to ask how to do it on a web forum.

it sounds like two different problems, 1st cables mis-adjusted, and a contaminated carb.

cable adjustment is fairly easy. disconnect the cables at the motor, place the control in neutral/idle. place motor linkage at idle. on the cable is a trunion nut in a holder, adjust this nut, so that the cable matches the motor, and reconnect.

cleaning the carb is covered here, it is the exact carb as in the pictures. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=244013

it is possible that you do need new cables, as 1988 cables are getting up in age.

Thanks for the help I will try that out. As for the carbs I just had them rebuilt so I think they should be fine. I also had a leak in my fuel line so I don't know if that caused any problems but I have already fixed that issue. It almost acted like someone driving a pickup with a stick and taking off in second, yeah it works but there is no power in take off.
