Trouble Removing Float Chamber

I took my boat out once so far, 67' 9.5 hp Johnson, and the motor would sputter and die in forward, and run crappy with the choke pulled out. So I bought a carb repair kit, assuming I'd have to clean the carb. So I took the carb out, and it actually looks pretty darn clean (pic 1). The float chamber also looked pretty darn clean (pic 2). I could barely see inside the intake manifold and it looked clean from what I could see (pic 3), not that I would take it off anyways. But I have a gasket for between the float chamber and the intake manifold in my repair kit, so I figured why not take the float chamber off just to take a look in there. Well I got 4 bolts out and tried to take the float chamber off. It peeled partially off, then I realized there was a different screw that sits right under the Cam for the throttle (pic 4, tough to see). I don't see how I can get this screw off, unless I remove the flywheel and all that stuff in there, and I'm afraid I'm going to mess something up if I remove all that stuff. I would just bolt the float chamber back down, but I'm afraid that I tore the gasket when I peeled it partially up (I tried to look to see if it tore, but it's tough to see). SO, question is, do I just bolt the float chamber back down and hope it didn't tear, or remove the flywheel and all that? Is that easy to do?

Also, my carb does look clean right? If so, what else might be causing my motor to die when I shift into forward?

Re: Trouble Removing Float Chamber

Put motor in forward gear
Turn throttle grip all the way toward "fast".
Now you can get the screw out.

Thank you! That did the trick! Clean as can be in there too, gasket had some corrosion on it though. Now I just need to figure out why the motor seems like it's not getting gas in forward.

Re: Trouble Removing Float Chamber

So the attached picture is of the only two parts, of 8, in the Intake Manifold that has any scum on it. Could this be enough to cause a running problem? I also noticed when I removed the carb, that the needle valve was turned very far to the left (the knob is gone), so with some pliers I turned it all the way to the right until it stopped. It did several full revolutions until it stopped. I know I don't want to leave it fully to the right, but could the needle valve being turned way left be what was keeping the motor from running?

I also just realized that the fuel pump is installed upside down, could that effect performance?

Re: Trouble Removing Float Chamber

Yes it can. When upside down, air is not effectively expelled from the diaphragm chamber. Result is similar to vapor lock.

Now that I said that, there were some years that the factory installed pumps upside down, but the pump didn't know it wasn't supposed to work so it did anyway. That doesn't mean that ALL pumps will work upside down.
