trouble running when in the water?

I have 85hp force outboard I have a few questions about.

the first one is the serial number plate is missing and the only number I have is the number on the title which is 22899. does that mean anything?

and second the motor runs good in the drive way with the water hose hooked up but when i put it in the lake its hard to keep it running, it dies when ever i try to give it gas. after looking over the motor i noticed one of the carbs is missing a plug from the top side which is about the size of a dime. which I jb welded a dime over I'm sure that my problem. But the problem still remains it runs and idles great out if the water but runs horrible in.

Your not running on all your cylinders. 2-stroke engines will run surpisingly weel (no load-no backpressure) on less than all their cylinders.

You have spark or carb issues, possibly both.

Do you have spark on all cylinders? You need a good 7/16" blue spark.

What happens when you hold your hand over each carb, one at a time?

Check your compression.Try the hand over the carbs test.
Usually when a motor runs well on muffs but not in the water it is a fuel delivery problem.Work from a ser. manual.Improper trouble shooting can damage the ignition components.

Ok thanks I'll try that. I'm hoping that its nothing serious. Does anyone know if the number means anything and if theres another way to identify the motor.

22899 is not gonna help. Ot is a part casting number or perhaps a part number, but not a serial or model number.

If the welsh plug (dime size) was missing on one of the carbs, then that carb was not delivering any fuel at idle, would not deliver fuel on off-idle pick up (thus stalling when you try to give it gas), and if the plug had fallen off or out while running, would have run lean at full or near full throttle. ---Thus giving the possibility of a melted piston serviced by that carb.

DEFINITELY check the compression on that cylinder. It will either be good, (close to the other two) or no good (0-20 psi)---no in between. Good, you are gold; no good requires at least a piston replacement, possibly a rebore and rebuild of the engine.

If you lucked out and the missing plug did not allow the previous owner to run the engine, that's great. BUT if you ran the engine for any appreciable time-- even at idle-- before repairing the plug with the dime, that piston and cylinder got either close to no, or no oil, and may show signs of wear on the crankpin rollers and big end of the rod in addition the the piston and rings. Because they are roller bearings and require very little oil, and because the piston skirt is grooved and traps oil, they will run for a little while on the residual oil trapped in the bearings with no harm. But soon, they need it replenished with fresh oil from the fuel/oil mix.

A good look-see is advised here. Also, if everything is ok, a little extra squirt of oil in that carb and that cylinder couldn't hurt.

I'd also would check/replace the fuel pump, after you verify the issues of the lean-out problem

I finely had made the time to check the compression and it reads 125-124-125 so thats good so i'm assuming that my problem maybe with the fuel pump or could it be something else?

Probably not related since it's a 3 cylinder, but we had a similar problem with a 100hp Evinrude. Ended up being a wire was loose on one set of contacts under the distributor. After that, 35mph...though it still has issues starting up after running on the lake.
