Good Afternoon All;

Trying to start 60 HP Evinrude so I can flush the motor for winterization.
When I turn the key, the starter motor spins, but does not engage the fly wheel. I notice some of the starter gear teeth are slightly chipped. This is a new boat for me, so this is the first time I have tried to start it except for the time the seller started it for demo for me.

I realize there could be a multitude of problems, but does this sound like a starter prob. or just a weak battery. Same thing happend when we added a hot shot jumper. FYI the temp here was in the 40's.

Thanks for any input.

Regards

Hal

Re: Trouble starting motor

Most of the time when My battery is hot and the connections are clen and tight it is nothing more than a good shot of 3 in 1 oil on the starter shaft to free it up don't use wd40 cause that just gums it up worse. Hope that's what's wrong with yours. Its 72 down here now but heading for the 50's later this week.

Re: Trouble starting motor

1. Remove the connections from the battery terminals.

2. Remove the NEGATIVE engine block ground cable from the engine and clean it-thoroughly.

3. "Walk" (with fingers) the starter pinion gear up the shaft by turning it in the reverse rotation of the starter rotation. LUBE the shaft (SPARINGLY) with a very light grease (lithium-white).

4. Replace all the cables.

Starters RARELY fail, unless overheated. Connections are the real starter problem culprit.
