i have a 1974 35 hp merc that recently went into water while running...i replaced or rebuilt most parts on the motor and is finally starting to run better and better...sometimes i have trouble starting it...it doesnt seem to want to fire...but then other times it starts great...any ideas on what this could be?

Re: trouble starting

you might want to try removing the flywheel and sanding the rust or trash from around the inside of it. also lightly sand your stator. any rust or build up of trash under it will cause intermittent starting and running problems.

buckman

Re: trouble starting

think I would try some electronic parts cleaner first -- spray the stuff up under the flywheel if you can, as well as on all electrical connections (with the engine off, of course).
