Trouble w/ reinstallation of pull start on Sailmaster 7.5

So I wanted to replace a carberator on my early 80's sailmaster 7.5. I had to remove what I want to call the rip cord barrel. Its where the pull cord raps around w/ the spring on the bottom. So I removed the 2 top bolts, and the 2 bottom bolts. Now I am trying to get the thing back together but I can't for the life of me get the spring to catch into the base plate. I know I know I need a manual but can someone tell me the trick to reinstalling the spring into the base?
