I have a 1977 Evinrude 85hp outboard motor. The engine has 2 carbs the top one when running will acclerate the motor but when you hit the bottom carb it won't do anything. The motor will not accerlerate any and you can hold the choke closed and it will not shut the engine off. please help I am at my wits end

If you have checked compression, and spark. The next step would be that bottom carb.

compression and spark are fine. I have pulled the bottom carb off and cleaned it and it is getting gas to it but it just seems not to be getting into the engine. When I pulled the plugs ouyt they have oil on them so I know the gas is not getting to the intake.

can anyone help me with this problem. Bottom carb is getting gas inside the carb but it is not going into the cylinder. Plus both plugs are firing on the bottom cylinders but it still won't accelerate

If your plugs are wet with oil, then you are getting fuel to the plugs. Are you sure that them plugs are firing? What was your compression readings?

Also, The spark must jump a 7/16 air gap. Blue snappy spark.

Just holding the spark plug aganist the block and looking for spark is not a test.

You can buy spark tester from auto supply store. Or you can easly build your own. Do a search here on the forum for (spark tester).

Good luck!

Are both carbs opening at the exact same time? I suggest you take off the air silencer (cover at front of carbs) and with the choke open either manually operate the carbs from idle to full throttle or better yet, have someone operate throttle from drivers seat. Watch what throttle plates do(ENGINE IS NOT RUNNING FOR THIS TEST)They should move at the same time and rate. If they dont, they need to be adjusted acordingly.
