The starter on my 1984 Evinrude 115 doesnt seem to be as strong as it was last season. I tried 2 different batterys and a jump box. All had the same result, the starter would pop up and turn just didnt seem to have the torque to start the motor. Does this sound like the a bad starter or something else?

Take the plugs out and turn the engine by hand. If it feels tight the starter is not the problem, your engine is tight. Not likely, but try that first. Make sure the battery cable connections (both ends) are clean and tight. That means remove them, clean them up, and reattach. Make sure the connection between the solenoid and the starter is also clean and tight. Try it now. If it still acts up, measure the voltage at the POS terminal on the solenoid as someone turns the key to start. (Plugs). If the voltage drops to 11V or less and you know the battery is good the starter may have bad brushes, tight bearings, or possibly a bad winding. Your local auto electric shop (starter/alternator/generator rebuilder)can rebuild it for you.

IT IS POSSIBLE THAT YOUR BRUSHES OR EVEN THE BUSHINGS MAY BE WORN. YOU COULD PULL IT APART AND CHECK THEM. ALL ARE SOLD SEPARATELY.

Re: Trouble with Starter on 84 Evinrude 115

A quick test to isolate whether the starter motor itself or the wiring, solenoid etc. is the problem is to measure the voltage directly across the starter motor as it is turning the motor over, i.e. with the red probe of the meter on the starter motor +ve terminal and the black probe on the case of the starter motor. If this reading is greater than about 9.5V suspect a starter motor problem. Easiest if you have someone else to turn the key for you while you take the measurements.

If the voltage is less than 9.5V you are dropping volts somewhere else. Check and clean all of the connections from the +ve battery terminal to the starter solenoid (including the battery switch if fitted) and from the solenoid to the starter motor. (As a clue, any bad connection should get warm when the starter motor is cranking).
