STILL having troubles with a Evinrude 35HP. 1984 Mod. E35RCRR.

I recently regasketed the entire engine block. Compression is fine. 127 even on both cylinders. New Thermostat...etc etc. Probably didn't need it, but it was a bit of an exploritory mission. Pistons were carboned up a bit, with slight sign of detonation, but nothing major at all. (I've seen way worse on perfectly working machines)

Threw the muffs on it yesterday to try it for the first time since reassembly, and still the same issue. Fires, Coughs, blows smoke, runs but dies by the time the cord returns. Sometimes when it dies it shakes side to side.

Took the flywheel off this morning to see what I could see. I am pretty sure I've narrowed it down to either Coil(although I have good spark). Stator Magnets (which look perfectly fine and ohm out acceptably) CDI(no real way to test this is there) or this keyway which looks close to flush and could be causing the motor to run roughly. Check out the links for pics....

What do you guys think???

Check out the thread by JB in the FAQ entitled "Outboard Wont Start", and let us know what you find.

Yup I been there. I was asking if that keyway looked like it was too flush and may knock the flywheel out of time?

Nothing wrong with the key. Make sure you clean up that shaft and flywheel tapers and have them clean and dry before reinstalling the flywheel, and use a torque wrench to tighten the nut to correct spec. Sorry I don't know what that spec is. But somebody else here will.

Will that "somebody" also take a look at that sensor and give your thoughts? Does it look like it is adjusted corectly?

If it is firing my thoughts would lean towards fuel. Are you priming it each time to restart it? Sounds like it is getting enough gas to fire, but not run.

I should, at the very least, be able to run it using a squirt bottle or primer. I can't even get it to run long enough to play with it.

Well the sensor looked a little dirty. Cleaned it up. Put it through a bunch of positions before returning it to the orginal. Ohmed everything out. Sensor, Charger, and ignition coils. Everything checks out.

Extremely tough to start. Cough sputter and shake. Did get it running a couple times. Maybe 5mins. Not near enough time to start looking at other things. Would die out on its own.

Very frusturated, but too stubborn to give up.

I don't like the sound of, " It look's like a little detonation"! What does that look like?

small pock marks on the top of the pistons... maybe 4 or 5 on each. I've seen way worse on other motors. with the solid compression I am not worried about the pistons/cylinders.
