Finally got my Evinride '97 50hp motor up and going. Got it out on the water and it runs great about half cracked. When I go about half I start getting shots of power. Engine revs and slows continually. Anyone have any ideas?

It sounds like a carb problem to me, like its leaning out really bad when you put the hammer down.

Also, I was hearing a low audible clicking in throttle controls while running motor. Then before heading back in I got a loud audible alarm but couldn't find any problems and alarm stopped after 2 seconds.

Someone said the alarm might be a low battery alarm if the water pump is really putting out.

By throttle control u mean at the control box??? Have u had it open??? Might be a wire grounding out causing alarm...

Yep, at the control box. I have not cracked the housing open to see if that is the problem. I took it out again a second time Saturday. Got the alarm for about 5-10 seconds after being underway for 10-15 minutes and it went away for the rest of the time. Kept hearing the low audible clicking though.

So ur motor is running better??? The click is a mystery to me but believe it to be linked to ur horn mysteriously going off... open ur box up inspect all wires for chaffing...

Motor is running slightly better. I have someone going tohelp me tune it more on Tuesday evening. It's not the horn as it sounds completely different. I'll take apart the throttle controls and see if I have anything there.

Re: Troubles @ WOT

Looks like it might be my coil after all. Got a good spark test tonight and it's pretty random on both plugs. After further listening and work I'm definitely getting non-fires on both cylinders and can see it with the tester. Checked wires and both appear to be good. PP is new.

Does this sound right?

Re: Troubles @ WOT

It would be odd for both coils to go at the same time. Might want to clean up the grounds and check again.

Re: Troubles @ WOT

I replaced the coil and no luck on the motor running any better. I don't know where to go from here except maybe pull the fly wheel and check the electronics under there.

Started pulling fly wheel off and got as far as the nut off the top. Looks like I'll need a puller to get any further. Does anyone have any suggestions before I get this done as to what might be the problem???

Would it be a bad stator or rectifier? I'll be checking both this afternoon. If anyone has advice on the testing please let me know ASAP.

Thanks!!!

check you kill button(s)if you have a man overboad clip be sure its good and tite, there have been many bad buttons on this site this week, the buttons put ground to your powerpack and engine will get no spark,or it might intermittantly kill the circut, look for a blk wire with a yel stripe, that would be the kill, look by the powerpack and unplug,c if it works better,MOTOR WILL nOT STOP if disconnected unless you pull plug wires or choke out,be careful, the .Im going to guess here, your impeller may need changing, seems like flow isnt good enough at idle ,causing the horn to sound, the clicking may bethe initial horn wanting to s
ound but perhaps the connections are a bit dirty

Sounds like it is time for you to get the shop manual (OMC) and do the troubleshooting that will point to the problem. The above is a series of guesses. My guess goes in the "rebuild the carbs bucket".

Re: Troubles @ WOT

I think that your right. I'm back to the carbs all right. I've taken the shop manual and gone through and verified ohms from the stator and rectifier. The stator ohms are at .6 and the manual says that it should be between .4 and .8. No grounds back to the motor from the stator either. Re-adjusted the throttle controls and tunded the low speed setting. Runs really well at idle and low RPM speeds. Took it out to verify that today as well.

Engine just seems to be starving for fuel at high end. Must be floats not set right in the carbs 'cause it seems to be both doing it. But I could be wrong. Played with the choke while at WOT and surging. Seemed to help out considerably once the timing between the surges was right.

The other suggestion was that I rebuild the fuel pump. However, I was told first to get the floats right before that part was attemped. However, in the long run it is not appearing to be electrical. Can someone tell me what I should expect from the spark test because that part still throughs me?
