The following was written for general aviation airplanes but applies quite well to us boaters. Many are the posts on this forum from folks who throw parts and dollars at an engine without thinking about troubleshooting. This article may help:

http://www.avweb.com/news/columns/190382-1.html

Re: Troubleshooting Methods

SoLittle,

Thanks for that article. It is brilliant - well-written, and full of common-sense, and it exactly applies to outboard problems.

I'm gonna file it for future use.

Re: Troubleshooting Methods

SoLittle -- you must have been talking with my "very wise" 86 year old mother-in-law. She once said "If you don't have it in the head, you must have it in the feet". Translated, that meant if you don't analyze a problem you expend a great deal of time, energy, and money dashing around looking for a solution.

Re: Troubleshooting Methods

You also can go to www.outboardparts.com
Then click on your model.
Then click on troubleshooting.
Then click on print this guide.
Then if you can't find your problem.
Then click on iboats.
Then type in your question.
Then if you can't fix it.
Then you can take it to your local shop.
Then if they can't fix it.
Then you can pour 1 gallon of gas on it.
Then you can light it....

P.S. Part of the above is just a joke.
For real go to www.OUTBOARDREPAIRS.COM First. Then post your question on iboats like JB says.
Also www.outboardparts.com Has some Troubleshooting help too.
