I recently picked up a non-working Motorguide Lazer 320es. I'd like to dig into it a bit and see if it's worth salvaging. For starters, I want to see if the lower unit (the motor) is good or not. the controls and the circuit board in the head are suspect. I'm thinking perhaps I can disconnect the wires that come up through the shaft (pull them off the circuit board) and directly connect them to 12 volts to see if the motor is working or not, and proceed from there.

There are four wires that come up the shaft from the motor. Two are larger, black and red. The other two are smaller (blue and green I think). Can anyone give me some solid information on making some combination of these hot and what each of the four wires does?

Many thanks!

Re: Troubleshooting Motorguide Lazer 320es

In case anyone else is seeking this information, I talked to a very helpful trolling motor mechanic today and he told me a lot about this motor. It was apparently not a real good design, used MOSFETs in the lower to control the speed. The blue and green wires feed the MOSFET circuit. The red and black are the primary power wires. The good news is that you can just put 12 volts to the red and black wires (guess which is which--OK, red is positive) and run the motor. I tried it on mine today and the motor runs fine. Now I need to figure out how to bypass the rest of the electronic junk and rig this thing to do my bidding!

Thanks for the post, I just picked up the same motor, sounds like similar problems, it doesn't respond to anything. Did you figure out any way to make yours work?

I have a 320ES that worked fine last summer but my loving sons lost the foot controller.
Thanks
