Troubleshooting No Start - Question

2000 Reinell Volvo/penta 5.0. I have a no start problem when the motor is hot. Will start in the driveway all day long but when we run it on the lake for 20 minutes or so we get a no start. Wait about 20-30 minutes and it will start up fine. I believe the ignition switch is ok as when you try to start you get the loud warning buzzer. That would tell me power is coming from the ignition switch, right? I think I can rule out the neutral start switch because when the motor isn't warm i can start it no problem go into gear, nuetral, start again....My problem is following the troubleshooting tips and going into the engine compartment. Where is the relay that I need to find? Also, any problem with running it on the muffs for 20-30 minutes in the driveway? I would like to try to duplicate this at home rather than on the lake.

Thanks

Carbed or injected? What is the full model number on the engine?

There are more numbers than that, it will be something like 5.0GL PEFS.

You're right and that is exactly what the numbers are. 5.0 GL PEFS.

Re: Troubleshooting No Start - Question

Are you mechanically inclined, what do you mean when you say you have trouble following the troubleshooting and going into the engine compartment? I see no problem running it for that long on the muffs, just keep an eye on the temp gauge. Once it's hot shut it off, take off the flame arrestor look down the carb and see if fuel is draining or percolating out into the intake. If not, make sure when you advance the throttle you get a stream of fuel from the accelerator pump in the carb. You also need to check for spark from the distributor. How does it run up to the problem point, are you getting full RPM? If you're not a mechanical person then a trip to the shop will be in order (no disrespect, not everyone wrenches on their own stuff.)

Re: Troubleshooting No Start - Question

When you say it won't start does that mean the starter cranks the engine over ok but it just won't start running, or that the starter won't turn the engine?

Re: Troubleshooting No Start - Question

Don, when I turn the key I get absolutely nothing except the warning buzzer. No click, nothing. Wait 20-30 minutes and starts perfectly. Aside from this, the boat runs great all of the time.

gbeltran, what i am referring to his Don S's no start troubleshooting tips. When I get to the engine I need to find the relay connector so I can do the troubleshooting from there. Just not sure where to find it!

Thanks

Hard to say without seeing it, and the manuals sure aren't going to help either. But you might look near the fuel pump and fuel filter assembly. Some models had the relays for start an fuel pump next to each other.

Ok, so I found what I'm sure is the relay connector. It is mounted above the fuel pump, had to remove two screws and pull it out from under the metal piece that protects the fuel line to the carb. It has a square box on top that is removable. Does that need to be completely removed to complete the troubleshooting tips or just pulled out enough to be able to touch the test light to the metal points?

Also, on the side of the "box" are the same numbers that you refer to in the troubleshooting tips.

Re: Troubleshooting No Start - Question

If there is only the one relay, then it's for the fuel pump, not the starter.

Look around on the engine. It's not that big an area.
