Troubleshooting T&T....field boat runs again

I brought home another boat. It has a 1989 90 hp Johnny with factory T&T unit. The motor is stuck in the "up" position and I can't get it down. When I try the switches I get nothing, no movement or noises. I have a manual, but I hoped I could get some words of wisdom on where to start looking. The previous owner had been told that the T&T motor needed replaced, how can I confirm this?

Not sure just where to lead you but you can take the screw that is on the starboard side of your engine bracket out and it will drop the engine. you cant see the screw as it sets up in the bracket that mounts to your engine. there is a hole about the size of your finger half way down that bracket look in there and you can incert a flat head driver in it and back the screw out. someone will be along here soon to better help you.

Pull the cover and locate the 4 wire connector between the cylinder heads. check for corrosion as I found this on my 1985 150. I couldn;t clean the contats so I cut out he plug and used butt connectors.

I completely removed the screw to the right and a little fluid came out. The motor would not budge. The lower "rams" are also extended.

ck the wires on the big red main connector. do you have a switch on the bow of the boat and do you have a switch on the starboard side of the engine just under the cowling? try all switches. If that does not work than its probably in the connector. the big red main connector. the wires are bad about corrosion and breaking and pulling out of the sockit.

under the hood mounted on the rear of motor there is a black plastic box
there is a two wire connector (green and blue) coming out of this box it goes down into trim motor
remove wires from connector touch one wire to positive (easiest is battery wire on starter solenoid)
touch the other to engine ground trim motor should run
assuming battery is charged
if motor doesn't run repair or replace trim motor
if motor does run trouble shoot trim electrical system
post back with test results

Thank guys. I'll post back with what I find. The ice storm is keeping me from getting to it today.

Re: Troubleshooting T&T....field boat runs again

Relays work fine, t/t motor is receiving 12v when each button is held in. It must be the t/t motor itself. Can it be rebuilt by a alt/starter shop? I disconnected the lines to the center hydraulic cylinder and have the whole assembly ready to come out. I assume that is how it is done. Will the wires disconnect at the trim motor? If not, should I cut them or disconnect them up top and later try to push them back in the plastic sleeve?

Also, I borrowed the tank, battery, and plug wires of the Baja and got it fired off without much trouble. I know I shoulda cleaned the carbs first, but it was too tempting. It was only for about 5 seconds. Long enough for my neighbors to take notice.

DO NOT cut the wires. if you buya new motor it will come with wires and you can use the old to pull the new. but if you do somehow manage to fix the old motor I will warrenty a failure at the splice if its outside the cowl/ the proper way to remove the unit is in the manual and says nothing about dissconecting any hydraulic lines. your making work. a method that works on most non saltwater motors is to remove the port transom bracket to acces the fwd port side screw. the second method requires the 6 bolts holding the unit to the brackets and the crosspin at the tilt ram to be removed. then the unit will rock out from between the brackets. to remove the wires from the plastic connector use a small screwdriver or pick and collapse the locking part of the metal spade. no worries now :)

I took the whole unit out and dissasembled the trim motor. (I also found the pressure relief screw you guys tried to lead me to.) The motor had ingested a little water and fouled things up. I'm gonna clean it up and give it a try tommorow.

I reassembled the trim motor and it worked! I put it all back together with new o-rings and fresh fluid and after working most of the air out of the system, all is good! Thanks for the help guys.
