I am wanting to get a new or maybe used truck in the next month or two. The wifes explorer has been my tow vehicle the last couple of years, it has the v6 and is 4x4. I want a stronger motor and like having the 4x4. What newer truck do you guys pull with and why did you get that one? I really like the new Nissan Titans, but would like some opinions about other trucks. I would like to have a 4 door crew cab.

Give me some of your thoughts or maybe what other truck(s), I should check out! Thanks guys!

Drive and pull with Chev 2500, 4x4, love it, gas milage only thing I wish was better. Rednecks 'round here drive Ford 250's, Never had one, and never will, but their pretty good also, (I suppose)
Won't go with Toy or Niss yet, but they are looking pretty good.

All depends on what your pulling, I have a strong haul, 'bout 6500 lbs.

Spud

Re: truck opinions

I tow with a 94 Dodge diesel. The other day, I looked at new Ford and Dodge 3/4 ton 4X4's with 4 doors. Dodge has really done a nice job for storage with the Mega cab. One of my boys has a Titan and the other a Chevy. Both loaded 4X4's and the Chevy is a diesel w/Allison. The boys like their trucks and I really like the new Dodges. Check out what owners have to say at edmunds.com.

Re: truck opinions

Hi Zach, If it is the VIP Vision that your pulling, a 3/4 ton will be more than enough. I have a 89 VIP Vision and pulled it with a E250 with the 300 inline 6. Tad whimpy on some step grades, but it did well on gas while towing. I used the E250 a couple of times to pull my 27' Bayliner which fully loaded weighs in at 8200 pounds. Now that really made it whimpy on the hills. Even my F350 diesel that I have now doesn't do great on the hills as I would like. It drags my Vision around like it isn't even there though.

A diesel would be overkill unless you have a large camper or plan to get a bigger boat.

Most have their problems. See my topic on my boss's 2006 Chevy. I mostly prefer Ford for my personal use for towing.

zip,

I don't like giving recommendations on vehicles. Vehicle purchases tend to be VERY personal.

However, without knowing what you are towing, recommendations are limited.

By the way, DO NOT underestimate the weight. Have it weighed at a truck stop or local moving company.

My Ford F_150 with the triton V-8in it, gets me and my 16-foot boat back and forth between Lake of the Ozarks and home quite well. It has limited slip rear axel on it, plus the towing package, Got quite a few hills between home and the lake pulls them with no problems.

Re: truck opinions

I like the Titan but my choice would be the Ford F150 crew FX4. Very quiet and nice interiors.

Re: truck opinions

A month ago I purchased a Dodge Ram 1500. It drives very nice and has been pretty good too me so far. From all the reading I have done in it, the main complaints are that it isn't the best gas mileage vs GM and ford, and the quad cab is a bit smaller than some of the others.

The only real complaint I have heard about the titans is that they have lots of rattles (Nissan has some TSB's for a few).

Re: truck opinions

Son uses a '01 F250/Triton 5.4 to haul up to 5Klb. on a utility trailer. It's 2wd so I don't know how it would be at the ramp with a big boat, but it has him quite happy.

Daughter #3 just traded an '01 Tundra V8 4X4 extra cab for a '02 F350 Diesel dually crew cab to pull her Boston Whaler Outrage 18. Don't know why she did that. I thought the Tundra was a good tow vehicle, but I guess she wanted more room for her 3 teen boys. Oh, she also tows a 5th wheel RV with it. Maybe that's why she went to the F350.

I towed a BW Outrage 18 about 4K miles with my '98 ML320 and had no problems. . . also got 15mpg doing it.
