Truck/Trailer Wiring

Hello all,

I'm trying to wire up my truck and trailer lights for the upcoming season. My truck is a 2006 Silverado- the base model with manual everything except transmission. I put a trailer hitch on it a couple of years ago but the truck is not wired for trailer lights.

The trailer light kit I purchased has a four way flat connection for the trailer and vehicle side. My truck has separate lights for the brake and turn signals and my understanding is that some sort of converter needed (according to the instructions supplied) to go from the vehicle connection to the 4 way trailer. Unfortunately, I can't find the part the instructions called for.

I'm not finding a whole lot of info for this online. I can't be the only one who has run into this. Can someone point me to a wiring diagram for this? Thanks!

Sam

In most cases there is a round kind of plug which is located above the spare tire. you might have to remove the spare tire to find the connector. They make a harness which plugs into this connector and has the flat four connector at the other end

AllDodge is right. Most will have a connector that is tied up underneath. You don't need a converter on a GM just a connector.

Oh ok. That would make life easier. Do you typically see those connectors even when the truck didn't come stock with a trailer hitch?

I'll check this evening- I didn't look that far under the truck, I just assumed that It didn't have any sort of trailer wiring.

The above answers are correct, there is a connection point in the vehicle wiring harness for you to just plug in. Look right behind the left tail light.

You can get the plug adapter that has both the 7 way and 4 way in 1 unit. That is what I used on my old suburban.

That's where i got my 'plug and play' harness for my old 1991 F150. Took 5 minutes to do :)
