TRUE or FALSE?? regarding 1972 Johnson 65hp

True or False?

I been searching UK marine dealers for 'Type C or Premium Blend' gear lube for my 1972 Johnson 65hp hydro-electric shift outboard, whilst talking to numerous marine mechanics one guy told me to use Automatic Transmission Fluid, is this true can I use ATF as a replacement for 'Type C gear oil' ?? and which product is the most recommended if true.
