1987 Mercruiser MCM140 (181 CID)
Seriel Number B403836

Situation: Boat sat in garage for 10 years unused(gas tank half full)

Done: 1)Replaced Battery
2)Replaced Condenser
3)Replaced Rotor
4)Replaced Points & Cap
5)Syphoned Tank
6)Replaced Fuel Filter
7)Pulled and Cleaned Gas Lines
8)Cleaned Carb Fuel Filter
9)Marvel Mystery Oil in Cylinders
10) New Spark Plugs
11) Opened up Carb -- Yuk
12) Cleaned up laquer in main bowl
13) Pulled and cleaned Venturi
14) Cleaned Float Assembly
15) Cleaned Accelerator Assembly??
16) Gumout Walmart $1.49 (if there is any left)

Symptoms:
1) Spark seems good but no fuel flow. It will run on ether but the girlfriend could get peeved if she has to squirt all day. Might be cheaper than gas if you get that at Walmart too.

Questions:

1) Is it imperative to completely clean the carb??, a little intimidated in going deeper.

2) Is there a spring assemble in the float mechanism between the needle and the pin? It looks like in this diagram but not in others.
http://marinepowerservice.com/Search/SearchPricing.cfm/pickModel/3.0L/pickDrive/6229718%20THRU%200B531853/pickyear/1987/path/%2041261/index_nbr/963/block_nbr/140/Doc_Part_nbr/%2041 261.cfm

3)Any way to quickly diagnose fuel pump operation...disconnect at carb and turn over sufficient?

Ignition Questions

1) Have firing order..numbering from bow to stern... correct? Is there a correspnding numbering for distributor cap?

Much appreciated.

Chris

10 years is a long time. If it was mine, I wouldn't turn the engine over till I pulled the engine, pull the pan and clean the oil sludge and water out of the pan. Condensation alone over that amount of time will make the oil unusable.
Then prime the oil pump with a drill and pump a lot of new oil through the oil system, put the distributor back in, then pull the plugs and spray a small amount of oil in the cylinders and crank the engine over without plugs to spread the oil around.
Now put it back together and run it before reinstalling back in boat.

I've read your posts from friday,it was sugested that you remove engine from boat and go thru completly----after siting for 10 years it and the out drive are going to need alot more than you have done to it.

You have to keep going through that fuel system until it will run on its own. Yes on the carb innards-pull it and let a shop clean it out and rebuild it, as those tiny passage ways are plugged, and also throw that ether in the garbage. Maybe needed on a -40 morning in Minnesota, but just a squirt of plain old gas will do the same. And frequent oil changes when its running again. Good luck

Mine was sitting for a long time and showed the same symptoms. If I took the fuel filter off and filled it with gas, the motor would run for about a minute, then quit.
I eventually found a siezed check valve where the fuel line connects to the gas tank. You might want to see if you have a similar problem.
