dumb question but not my first...lol

trying to change my outdrive oil but having trouble getting the vent screw loose at the top. the drain screw came loose but was very tight. i'm going to go try to buy a larger screwdriver tomorrow cause my biggest one is still too small for the slot in the screw and keeps slipping. i tried grabbing a nickel in vise grips but it slipped too. also sprayed it a few times with PB Blaster. any other tricks? a little heat from a propane torch? any other 'homemade' tools or gimmicks?

got it...lol. but i wasn't the one that tightened it. must have been the boat shop that worked on it before i put it in the water. i did buy new gaskets for it though. oil looks like new but we will see how much drains. its barely dribbling out now and there definitely isn't 32oz there. i have the drive tipped all the way up in the trailer position. i haven't lowered it at all yet to drain it but will. hopefully get about 32oz out or......?

BTW-i found a flat file that was about the perfect size for the slot and held it with vise grips to get it loose. i do have a hand impact. have a power impact too but was afraid to use that

well i just checked and there is definitely at least 32oz. i will measure it to be sure but as slow as it was draining out i thought it must be almost out but it almost overflowed the container i was using, which looks to be just a bit bigger than one of those old cardboard quart oil containers

Replace the two plugs with plugs that use allen wrenches. Much easier. The lower plug should be magnetic.

Yes on the Allen plugs; I started using them on my OMC Cobra some years back and they are much easier to remove.

hmmm...manual said 32oz. thats all i bought. guess i may have to make another trip to the boat store but what drained out looks like about 1 1/2 qts

EDIT: anyone know if wal-mart or auto zone carry any oil for the outdrives? i bought the quicksilver at the shop so not sure if mixing it would be ok? or i could buy 2 from one of those stores and save the quiksilver. the nearest boat shop is 50 miles away and can't get there till next tuesday. the boat goes into storage tomorrow
