If I move the lever manually should the trim buttons not work from the throttle lever and from the the side of the motor?

The trim sender has nothing at all to do functionally with the trim switches. It's only connected to the trim gauge, nothing else. The trim sender is just a potentiometer (variable resistance device) for the trim gauge, which is kind of worthless, unless you can't see the motor from the helm. Sounds like you could use a shop manual.

Shop manual would likely have the resistance values for the two extreme travel ends for the sender. I don't have them connected on my boat and my motors are a completely different model with different senders.

I wouldn't spend to much time or any money fixxing that, I have a CMC tilt trim on mine and spent the extra $100 on the trim gauge and never ever even look at it.

After you spend some time on the boat you will just run the trim by feel, you can just feel when it is right, my 2 pennies.

So it is not a trim limit switch? It is trim sender to be used with a gauge on the dash?

It is a sender for the guage; my motors don't have a limiter switch at all.
