Trying to identify old Johnson Sea Horse

i just bought a 14' Chrysler Big Fisherman with an 18hp Johnson Sea Horse. i took it out this weekend and it started and ran, but it really seemed to lack rpm or power, i'm not sure which. It was nowhere near planing out. i checked the hub in reverse, per a previous post, it doesn't appear to be "spun". i've decided the best approach would be to correctly identify the year it was made before tinkering with it. The model # on the plate reads FD-12, and the serial # is 1709146. i tried links to the OMC site, but they didn't work, at least for me. i'm guessing that in it's prime this motor should have performed much better on this hull. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Howdy BigFish.

Your FD-12 is a 1958 18hp.

Use Champion J4J equivalent plugs gapped at .030. Gap the points at .020.

Fuel mix is 24:1, which is 1 quart of good outboard oil (TC-W3 rated) to 6 gallons of 87 octane unleaded, alcohol free gasoline.

Good luck. :)
