The boat is a 1970 Olympic tri-hull, as i was told, i'm trying to identify the out drive to replace it and cannot find a id number on it, any help would be appreciated.
As said in the above posts the lower electric shift gear housings from 68 to end of production are the same. They are known a 16c models. The one in the picture is a “high profile” model which started phasing out from 73 on. The internal gear sets and bearings are interchangeable whether high or low profile with the exception of the pinion and water pump shafts.
You want to avoid pre 68 models known as 15 s.
If you get another lower gear housing it has to have a swivel bearing with the shift wire. You will have to remove the exhaust housing from top cover on the drive. The exhaust housing has to be attached to the lower to reinstall it so that the shift wire is not damaged.
Try to get a service manual.
The 800 only has the internal gears in the upper housing that you can use. The 800 drive is the “low profile” style and is 4” shorter.
To check a electric lower get a ohm meter and each wire needs to read 4.5-6.5 ohms to ground. This checks the wire and the coils. Then connect with a 12 volt battery both wires to the pos. Side and the case to ground. You should not be able to turn the prop shaft in any direction. If it turns easy in any one direction it has a broken clutch spring.
