I?m looking for some help understanding how to set the timing pointer on my 1990 Merc. 100 HP. I?m having a problem understanding the dial reading or what they are actually asking for. I?ve used a dial before but what they are asking doesn?t make sense to me. The manual wants the engine set to TDC. Set indicator to 0 then back the engine to 0.554 this is where I get lost. Are you actually supposed to back the engine up far enough for the needle to go around five full turns making .5 and then continue another .054 which since you would be reading it backwards would land on 0.046. I think I?m over thinking something that should be easy. The rest of the timing process makes sense. Thanks for any help.

Most dial indicators read in both directions by having rev numbers of a digital will just read out either way all they want done is to set the indicator at in this case is .454 to the point thats marked .554 on the flywheel as it's easier to find .554 exactly than TDC.
