I have a V6 88 Black Max...

No matter how tight I torque the bolts which secure the thermostat housing, I still get a tiny bit of leakage. And it ends up rusting my spark plugs.

Has anyone ever cut gaskets to fit the tstat housing? How thick of a gasket should I use(1mm?)?

I have a 90 hp and recently when I took my stat out, I just used some blue RTV to reseal the gasket I tore all up in popping the cover. Didn't have a new one to replace it but it didn't matter.

HTH

Mark

Mark-
Yeah see, I never had a gasket in the first place. Merc didn't use gaskets on the tstat covers on my engine.

I was just wondering if anyone forsaw any problems by adding a gasket or if anyone has added a gasket to the setup.

I deplore blue silicone on outboards.Actually anywhere.

I thought Merc put a gasket ON the thermostat, and that sealed the stat to the block, and the cover to the stat.

Now if you DO take out the stat,Yes you have no gasket.

(AND an engine running too COLD)

DHP

hi andy, my 88 magll (XR4)150 has rubber cups that encompas the whole thermostat, seals when the bolts bottom, it squeezes the rubber to seal. i would use a thick .20 from a autoparts place to make mine. works great. get the one thats blue and real soft. hope this helps. ron

Yea, there should be a gasket on the stats... If there is a leak you may have some crap built up around the housing/seat area, or the hose is leaking????

However, I don't think a "little" rtv will hurt...
Let us know Andy...

Re: Tstat gasket, has anyone ever?

To clear up some things here. I have a gasket for the tstat itself, i.e, the little o-ring "type" gasket. But I don't have one for the tstat housing on my engine. And no the hoses are not leaking. The parts manual nor merc parts express says it shouldn't have a gasket for the housing and that it should only have the gasket that slips around the tstat and seals/seats the tstat to the block.

The problem is that when the tstat opens there is obviously some water filling the little tstat housing before it passes thru the hoses to the exhaust and/or poppet and/or tell-tale. The housing is leaking (metal to metal surfaces are sealing 100%). They have no debris on them, maybe the surface aren't true.

So I need some sort of gasket. Whether it be a liquid type gasket or an actual rubber gasket is the question. The thing that scared me about the liquid gasket is that it soo thick that if got washed away from where it was supposed to be it could clog something up. That's why I was thinking rubber. But I just wanted to bounce the idea off others here before going one route or the other. Of course there is a nice even split between no RTV and yes to RTV. Go figure.
