Does it hurt to run a 150 mariner 1993 without the tstats and also how do you back flush the cooling system? May have gotten some sand in there.

remove tha stat and wash backwards, they put the stat in there for a reason. the engine is designed to run at a certain temperture. running with out the stat, the engine runs cold, effecting performance, adding to carbon build up, and other problems. get a stat. if you have a lot of sand, replace the impeller,

That sums it up nicely.

Re: tstats with or without

Beins we are in the Merc forum and you said '93 150 that means that you have a V6 which has 2 stats, one on the top rear of each bank of cylinders.

Take a look at the location of the starboard stat. Notice that due to the V engine that it is half an inch or so higher than the other.

With no stats, the higher one can't fill with water so that top cylinder is not completely cooled which could result in significant damage.

Take it from a genuine (stubborn but not stupid) hard head.......check your stats for accuracy (opening temp stamped on pellet.....143F should be the number) and put them back in. Better yet put new ones in; only $10 on here.
