I just purchased a boat with a aprox. 87 merc 35 hp it has a tube that goes from the lower unit up. on mine it is capped off about where the pivot is to pull up the motor. on my father in laws 00 75 hp it goes up and follows the control; cables what does this tube do? Is it normal to be plugged on my motor or is it supposed to go somewhere ? any help is greatly appreciated. pete

its a water tube for a speedometer. its capped when not in use so it doesn't spray water

thanks for the info, so if I wanted a speedometer before getting a fishfinder could I get one that attaches to that tube. extend the tube to the console and I be all set?
