Tune up needed?

well on my 1996 7.0L V8 merc the engine has been funny for the last couple of runs. Its like the engine is reving up by itself not crazy just a few hundred RPMs and on low idle the engine sputters and sometimes stalls out and this is about a half an hour after starting, so the engine is warmed up. My dad and I think it needs a desperate tune up, like new fuel filter,oil filter, Oil change, and new plugs. But we'd like to know in advance if this is will fix the problem before we take it for a very expensive tune up.

Never heard of a 7.0L Merc. But if you don't know the last time it was done, a full tune up is in order anyway. We could speculate, vacuum leak, water in fuel.........but if your are taking it to the mechanic anyway, he should (actually having it in front of him) be able to narrow it down to a cause pretty quick.

I'd say a Tune Up,+ Possibly a Carb Rebuild just Might be in order......
