We have an '89 Chris Craft 19 ft with a 4.3 OMC. Question ? I have documentation that the motor was professionly tuned up with new plug wires, plugs, and points in 2010. Then the boat was run very little for the following 4 yrs. I bought the boat a yr and a half ago. Was hard to start when cold, so I put a new point set and condenser.,and new plugs, Ran good last yr. Oh has a 2 barrel Rochester Carb. Idles good and does not miss out under a load. Still fairly hard to start when cold though... Gaps all set properly... Would a new coil help any ? Thanks for your feedback, does start somewhat easier when it gets Summer like.... I just hate long starts and warm up times..

Did you check the ignition timing after replacing the points and do you pump the throttle twice before a cold start?

Thanks men, no didn't recheck the timing or use a dwell meter, the choke is working I think ? Will check it out.

if you did not use a dwell meter or recheck your timing after installing new points, you are most likely off with your timing.

Hard starting when cold?
The fuel could be leaking back down to the tank.
Check the anti-siphon valve in the tank.

You should have a mechanical choke.
Make sure it's set right.

Rochester 2bbl carbs are top-fill so fuel will not drain back and even if it does, the float bowl remains full. Set the dwell first, then the timing. (Why in that order is a physics problem that I'll let you ponder when you have nothing better to do.)

Turns out the round choke thermostat on the side of the carb was broken. Got a new one at O'Reilly Auto parts for $13.00, put it on and set the choke approx. 1/8" open and it starts much better now when cold.
