I read the sticky in its entirety but I have a question. When turning the engine over to set points gap and dwell can I use the key to turn it over or is it necessary to use the remote starter switch? If it is necessary to use the remote starter switch then can somebody tell me what it is and where to find it.Thx.

not unless you can be in 2 places at the same time, the helm and the dist watching the lobes.any kind if push button switch commected to the + battery and the small solenoid lug closest to the engine. Or at the slave solenoid across the 2 large lugs.

You can use the key. The remote starter switch just makes it easier unless you have someone that can turn the key for you. A remote starter switch is just a way to bypass the ignition switch and coil so that you can be at the engine and turn it over. One thing you can do with a remote switch is turn it over without starting the motor if the key is off. You can use the key and temporarily tape of the coil power wire to prevent starting and spark. The ones I have seen are like a handle with a trigger button.

The distributor cap will be off, would this not prevent starting and spark?

That would prevent starting but the coil will still "try" to spark. Don't get into the path.

I appreciate your patience guys, I am new at this,do you think you have a picture of where to connect the + wire for this procedure? Is the lug on the solenoid the one with the yellow/red wire?

You can turn engine with a socket on the bolt on the harmonic balancer. Just take plugs out to make it easy. Key off. When setting points you want to be on high pt of lobe. Easy to turn engine small increments with socket/rachet. No need to wire remote starter.

Thank you but do I connect it to the yellow wire with the red stripe on the little terminal of the solenoid?
