Tune-Up?

I have a 1985 Force 50 HP.

We took it out today and it would run just fine so long as someone kept pumping the hand pump on the fuel line. If we stopped doing that it would die.

Does that sound like I need a tune up or is there some simple thing I need to do?

Re: Tune-Up?

If it ran well when you kept squeezing the fuel line bulb, then you were acting like a fuel pump. Replace the fuel pump diaphragm and gasket. That should do it. 3 bucks for the diaphragm, 1-3 bucks for the gasket. Should be available at any Mercury dealer. Only six screws if you have the two stage pump. You can easily do it yourself--15 minutes to 1/2 hour.

Also, check any hoses that go from the block to the pump to be sure they are not leaking pressure and vacuum and check to be sure the internal check valves are working properly. They should pass pressure in one direction and hold it in the other.
