I was on another forum (shhhhhh, don't tell anyone) and they were discussing having their prop tuned. Apparently they believe that the props performance can be enhanced, even brand new ones from the factory. The cost was in the neighborhood of $500!!!!!

This is the first that I have heard of this. I can't imagine that I need to have my prop tuned that came with the boat. Is this necessary for an I/O?

I am still looking at getting a 4 blade, would this mean I should have it scanned and tuned first? Sounds like a lot of money for very little gain....what am I missing here?

Re: Tuning a prop

There's this retired Merc Prop guy in my neck of the woods that does that all the time. Blades come with tolerances. None are blue-printed. That's basically what he does. But mostly he tweaks racing props and such. For consumer motor powered rigs, there are a lot more productive ways to get more speed. They're fine out of the box for 99.9% of us.

That's what I always thought. I can understand high performance boats, etc, but I can't imagine there is enough variance in performance for me to spend $500.

Like willy said most people dont need a prop tuned and could'nt tell the difference probably if they did.now racing is a different story.

I'll third the motion for hi-perf only. And that's still a bunch. As for most of the rigs out there for 500 you can buy another box prop.
