I've shot turkey, goose, and dove all from the same 200 dollar 12 guage mossberg from Walmart.

Dont want to knock purpose built guns, but I think any shot gun will do fine.

I'm going again next month!

Ken

I have a Mossberg 500, and for turkey season it's loaded with 3" shells (#6 shot).
As to the effectiveness, I don't know for sure. In 2 seasons of hunting, Mr. Tom hasn't stepped within range :( . It was throwing nice patterns, and the paper turkey would've been dead.

I use a Mossburg 835 with a extra full choke and either 3" or 3 1/2 inch shells.

The guns I would be looking at: in a pump you can't go wrong with Remington 870. The Benelli Super black eagle is a great gun and I have the Winchestor x2 and I really like it.

Maybe a real expert will post, but I think for turkeys something that will shoot 3 1/2 shells and camo would be ideal.

I bought a used 835 "SuperMag" with Accuchoke in Camo a couple of months ago. It was in beautiful condition. I bought it and a couple of extra chokes and a camo sling all for $275. I love it a lot because I've never busted the clays as well with other shotguns.
I'm going to order a slug barrel for it later.

Spring gobler season opens in about another 12 hours. I bought a new set of diapham calls that came with an instructional CD. This months homework for my wife was to practice until perfect.
I have to say the hen has the yelpin' down pretty well. ;)

My vote is the Remmington 870. I dont like the tang mounted safety on the mossbergs.(or any gun for that matter) I would get the get the 3.5 inch chamber, just in case you want to punish yourself, and a little better resale. Although, I dont know why anyone would want to shoot a 3.5 inch shell, the 3 inchers hurt bad enough. And the 3 inch shells will kill ole Tom just fine. The 3.5's have more pellets in them, so you can get a little more range, but again, they HURT! That being said, you dont feel the recoil if you hit the turkey. ;)

Opening day;
Rain, which isn't a deal breaker. That and 30mph winds were. Plenty of time in the next 5 weeks. ;)
I agree with you on the 3" except in areas that require steel shot.
http://www.sacramentoriver.org/acce...&Strangecode=4e24e3ca17f7cdbafb77ab2a49039659
Then I have to go with a heavier shot. The 3.5 compliments those conditions. These have looked good on paper targets with a full choke for 2&BB steel shot.
http://www.winchester.com/products/catalog/shotdetail.aspx?symbol=XSM12L3

If it were legal, my first gun of choice for Turkey would be my .22 ... :)

The fun of turkey huntin' for me is calling them in close. Kinda takes the fun out of it when you can snipe them from 150-200 yards.

I use #4 steelshot with a Ithica Featherlight 12 ga. It was a hand me down gun in the family. Works well for me. Below was taken out my back dinning room window. Its nice not to leave the confines of a nice warm house to get my game.
I have the Mossberg 835 Ulti-Mag. It shoots any shell, any load. I use if for small quail, coyote, and anything. Plain old blue and walnut, I love it. It's a big gun, but I'm 6'7" 300lbs+ so it fits me.

Skinny, I've got a video clip of a black cat that was stalking a tom. The tom watched the cat from about 10' away. Then he turned and the cat made its move on the tom, but the tom turned and chased the cat into the woods. The funny part was that the rest of the turkeys ran into the woods after the cat. I should send that clip in.

Sorry for wondering off topic Ron......SS

Re: Turkey hunters?

Awhile back (before animals had feelings we thought), the local fire department put on shooting matches. They would put a turkey in a box with just its head sticking out. At a 100 yards, you could only use a 22 rim fire with open sights. Not only was it a hard shot for the distance, but that turkey would flop its head around making it even rougher. However, when I was 10, I got the turkey with my first shot. Those were the days that I love to remember.

Now days, they use a small clay target at 100 yards. It was something about it being cruel to the turkey having its neck stretched thru a hole. Sorta like it that way now because you don't have to dress the turkey and invite him for dinner. :D

Good luck KIZ!
