Sorry, couldn't resist. You will need a 50hp carb for starters. Pick up a manual and see if the timing specs are different for the two motors. A new carb can be had at a Merc dealer for around $120 bucks, so it may be a cheap 10 horses. You already know the 40/50 uses an identical powerhead, so why not go for it?
